Successfully starting your new job

Congratulations! You have secured your dream job and the start date is looming large! Don’t be daunted, be excited, do some preparation and all should go smoothly. Hopefully these tips will help you on your way.

  1. Detox. If possible, try and get a week off between roles to mentally leave your job behind and let you start nice and fresh.
  2. Research your new company. Find out who's there, what they've done, how they've grown, what their reputation is like across their industry.
  3. First impressions count so be punctual and dress appropriate to the dress code you noticed during your interviews and, if in doubt, a bit smarter for at least the first few weeks. Show initiative and enthusiasm.
  4. Names. Make a conscious effort to remember people’s names, for obvious reasons.
  5. Politics are always close at hand. Try not to be drawn on opinions about your colleagues or other politics. You will not initially know who you can trust!
  6. Learn the ropes before you decide to reinvent the wheel. Take time to learn the existing processes as there may be good knock on reasons that are not immediately apparent  as to why things are done the way they are.  You also do not want others to think that you are immediately being critical of what they have been doing.
  7. HELP! Don’t be afraid to ask people for help as it is likely to help you shortcut your way to being productive and can even be a good way to network and make friends.
  8. Socialise.  Be sociable and don’t be afraid to go for a couple of after work drinks. However, don’t get in to drinking competition that could end up being an embarrassment to you!
  9. Enjoy yourself as with change there comes opportunity. “Find a job you like and you add five days to every week” – H. Jackson Browne
